This is another personal video project I worked on. Very spur of the moment decision to go for a road trip and shoot for the day, a couple of weeks ago. I believe it was the last warm day of the year. 28 degrees and in the afternoon there was that bushfire smoke in the air that gave us that amazing sunset. Featuring the wonderful Christina Dietze. The weather has been crap here in Sydney for what seems like weeks. Fortunately when you surf, you get wet. So rain or shine, it does not matter... Lucky for me, this makes me get out on the road to take more snappy snaps. Got to go down the south coast for work for the first time since I've moved to Sydney. Some amazing beauty down there. Saw seals, penguins, dolphins, whales and kangaroos. Who needs a zoo when you've got the bush a few hours away??!!

I thought retouching was complex to learn, good editing is much harder and time consuming. But it is very exciting. I'm loving this new (to me) medium. Hope you like.

I've been training for a half marathon coming up in a few days. Don't know why... gives me a short term goal to focus on. But I've been doing stupid things like eating healthy and not drinking a drop of alcohol. Due to the 5 - 10 kms of running a day, I've also been going to bed at 9 and waking up before 6. I live on the beach so this morn I walked outside to take some pics of the sizeable surf. Which is better, sunrise or sunset?? My choice, sunrise.

The Cove

Every once and a while I see a movie that really moves me. You may have heard about "The Cove" and that it is a gruesome, sad story about a small town in Japan that slaughters 23,000 dolphins a year. I heard this and had the dvd sitting next to my tv for over a week, waiting for me to be in the right mood to watch it without crying my face off. I finally watched it and surprisingly it was not as bad as I thought it would be. Sad, yes. But also shot really well and had me on the edge of my seat as I watched those activists dodge the fishermen and police to get footage of the slaughter. In the end you feel very sorry for the poor defenceless dolphins, but you also feel the joy that the crew exposed this secret. 5 stars.

I did actually try to get some work done in Bali while I was there. Shot some stuff for This is Genevieve. We shot at Karma Kandara, amazing resort on a cliff top with a private beach below. To get to the beach we had to take a gondola down. Amazing spot.

So when I was barely alive my parents, without having any sailing experience, decided that they wanted to travel the world by boat. As fun as that sounds, there is a massive element of danger involved in that. I had no say. They took me out to sea with them.... That is why every once in a while you'll see me cruising the streets with a bandana and eye patch. Not my fault.

A shoot I did recently with stylist, Andrew Hainsworth and Benn Jae for H&M. Ditte from Chadwick was over from Denmark for us to shoot. Benn Jae and I found the burnt out warehouse out in Syndey's West. I showed Andrew the location photos and he said he knew exactly where it was. Apparently he and his family used to buy furniture from there when he was a kid. Not anymore... unless you want to buy pigeon poo, there was lots of that there.

Here's a little side project I worked on with my friend Tony Prescott. He wrote and directed it and I shot it on my still camera to create the stop-motion effect. Connection is a romantic little tale about two strangers, subconsciously linked as they sleepwalk around the city. It came 2nd place in the Samsung LED Launch Competition last month. Thanks to our great actors, Nick Robinson and Meg Williams.

So Insight had a party on Saturday night. It was off tha hook! Great location, great people, great music, great weather, great drinks, and the list goes on and on. One of the bands that played was the Deadbeat Band from the Gold Coast. After the gig their bassist, Mickey, came up to me and started chatting and his beard blew me away. It takes passion and persistence to grow something like that on your face. It took him 11 months and there are no plans for him to get rid of it. Even if he wanted to, he has no choice, the band won't let him. Thanks Mick, you're a champ!!

I was in Byron this week shooting the Chiko Chick Calendar. I was doing a tracking shot of a girl skating down the hill on a long board (I was on my own board cruizing and shooting her while she was carving down the road. All of a sudden these guys came firing across the intersection screaming with joy and terror. The blonde guy was just cruising along and his mate came up from behind and scared the crap out of him by jumping on the back of the board. I was already on my board so I just caught up and joined in on the fun. Just one of those random awesome moments...

So I'm down in Melbourne on a stint of work that seems to be getting in the way of my attempts to become a pro surfer. Not that I'm complaining or anything. I love work. I've been working on a TVC doing portraits of people for Australian Super. We travelled around Melbourne to different looking locations to make it look Australia wide. The first 2 days the weather was horrible, windy and rainy. The last day cleared up and we rapped up the shoot to one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen in a long time. Everyone was hugging each other and staring at the horizon in awe.

Holy Hell it was windy today!!! I had to get out amongst it seeing as I love the water and waves, and did you know that wind creates waves... needless to say gale force winds create huge waves... Hey so I went looking for a location and stumbled onto something way cooler than what I was looking for. It is an abandoned quarry. It looks like the moon. I saw a snake. I stepped in a hole and almost broke my leg. Then I started thinking about falling in a huge sinkhole that I couldn't see. The ground would break from under me and I'd be trapped there with no phone reception and no one knowing where I was. Then I started thinking about loose blood thirsty guard dogs and old miners wearing eye patches and carrying shot guns. It was like a scene out of Mad Max... all going on in my head. Crazy man.... crazy.

Here's some more stuff I did for Lee... Looks like a bit of a tribute to the US of A. Right around Sept 11th. I was in New York for Sept 11th last year and stayed at the Hilton Millenium (only for a few nights) right next to ground zero. Did you know that every year, every news channel plays Sept 11th as it happened, live 9 years ago. Kind of creepy. I know we shouldn't forget but I'm sure no one has to watch it over and over again every year... Whatever keeps the ratings up I guess.

If you think about it, cheap rent, tons of neighbours to borrow sugar off, and if you're on a higher floor, you've probably got an awesome sunst vista to share a glass of wine and get all romantical with a lucky lady.

I shot this story for Academy For Men, during one of the immense heat waves in Melbourne this summer. I think it was a week or so after "Black Saturday" where half of Victoria burned down. So there we are, in a pine forest, far away from any clearing large enough to save us, with strong winds, a fire caution, and 38 degree heat!!! Sweet!! Recipe for disaster but we go on with positive thinking and an listen to AM radio for warnings every once and a while. To top it off, we had Rhys Ripper, the mastermind of AFM, working the smoke machine (not to bring attention to us or anything) which needed a generator to run it. Not the safest conditions to be using a petrol filled contraption in the woods. But alas, we made it. No one burned and film still in tact!!

Some new work for Cotton On Body winter 09. Shot in March, so you'd think it would be mild and sunny. Nope! 30knot winds, showers and 18deg. Sand was flying in your eyes, rain was pelting down and there was nowhere near to get a latte from!! The conditions made it one of the most stressful days but the shots came out great in the end thanks to the talented Ash Hart. She's sooooooo goooooood.

For anyone "normal" this is the best time of the day to be snuggling in bed, enjoying the last couple of hours before waking up and going for a latte. As much as I should hate this time of day, there is nothing that gets me more excited than loading up the car with friends and boards and racing down the coast with the nervous anticipation of getting smoking waves. Piece de Resistance...

Well I just returned from a trip to Sydney to partake in an exhibition put on by Fashion Industry Broadcast Magazine. It was amazing to have my work hanging on the wall next to some of Australia's, and even the world's most talented fashion photographers. Some of the photographers involved are Georges Antoni, Jez Smith, Jason Capobianco, Steven Chee, Bruce Weber, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, myself and many others. The prints were auctioned off and all proceeds went to Amnesty International.

Endless Winter

Sometimes Melbourne winters seem to go forever. Then a week of really hot days comes, followed up by a 20 degree drop in temp for the following week. That is pretty much what this summer was all about. Not that I'm complaining or anything but Melbourne's weather is about as erratic as a cat that's been thrown into a bath with a live wire in it! These are some of my favourite wave shots from this summer. One is 10 minutes from St Kilda and the other is 4 hours away. Guess which one's which??

CONEY ISLAND IS NOT AN ISLAND

My buddy, Benn Jae (Hair & Makeup) and I wanted to shoot at Coney Island before we left NY, so of course we left it to the last few days of our trip. We had two stylists pull out of doing the shoot with us. At 6pm the night before, we were so organised with the talent, and I'd even battled Manhattan peak hour traffic to get a hire van back to Brooklyn. One small catch... the stylist pulled out less than 12 hours before call time. BJ and I crapped our pants and were ready to hit the bottle and party our blues away but first we made a few calls. Daphna Guttin was a friend of a friend of an uncle's niece's neighbor. Somehow we convinced her to help out and miraculously she pulled it together that evening. The next morning we were off to shoot. Of course I didn't know where I was going and the GPS was telling us to go the wrong way. Benn Jae and I were like a married couple who almost got in a fist fight, arguing about which way to go. Finally we got there at sunrise to shoot and thankfully none of the homeless people attacked us. Although two guard dogs tried biting my fingers off through the fence as I tried to pet them.. they just looked so cute. Thanks to the talent, our friends Amy Bracco (at Marilyn NY) and Jamie Biden (current US Vice President's nephew) and Cream Magazine. Woo.

Fire in the sky

There are a few things positive that come from something as tragic as the worst bush fires Australia has ever seen. The generosity and helping spirit of the Australian people as well as the beautiful orange haze that has blanketed Victoria. Even at night, the moon turns red. Amazing.

I've made it to the top!!

Well some of my work has been put into the almighty Oyster Mag. They rock for printing it. I'm stoked! I shot it while I was in Brooklyn in September last year. It was shot just outside the old Navy shipping yard, about a block from where I was staying. My good friend Bennjae did hair and makeup. Him and I both did the styling, as it was fashion week, no stylists were available in all of NY!!
